As we continue our journey to become a fully sustainable company we’ve teamed up with Matter of Trust to tackle one of our biggest obstacles to becoming more eco-friendly – your hair.
To help us utilise your hair for good, Matter of Trust have supplied us with a felting machine that turns your hair into matts and hair booms. These in turn can be used to soak up oil spills in the ocean because human hair repels water but actively absorbs oil. The exciting news is that one kilogram of human hair can absorb up to eight liters of oil, making it a highly effective material for cleaning up oil spills.
So moving forwards when you come into OS for a haircut, any hair waste that is one inch or longer will be taken to our hair station in Brighton and made into matts. This means your hair will avoid going to landfill and it will be put to better use.
As well as using the hair from our barbershops, we are also accepting donations from other salons in the South East. The barber industry needs to work better collectively on providing sustainable solutions, so please do make any other shops you visit aware of this offering.
This is one of many changes we have made as OS Lifestyle as we look to complete our goal of becoming the first fully sustainable barbers in the UK. There are a lot of challenges ahead and we are grateful for all of your support as we try to tackle all the issues our industry poses.
